Do you know how to make your jewellery sparkle? Find out with my top homemade tips.
There’s nothing more annoying than opening your jewellery box and the fav piece you were about to pair with your new outfit has tarnished and faded. Cleaning jewellery and keeping it sparkling doesn’t have to be a hideous chore and can prolong the life of your favourite items. So no grumbling here please as I have some top, quick tips to make your jewellery .clean as a whistle!
Tarnished silver is always a sad sight. If you notice your silver is looking a bit faded, then get a bar of soap and some warm water. Give it a gentle clean then try to buffer it up with a soft cloth to restore your sparkle and shine. Or if you have a heavily tarnished piece of silver try mixing a paste of three -parts baking soda to one-part water and giving the jewellery a good clean with a lint free cloth. Make sure you wash the paste off and buff carefully.
If you want your Gold to be good as new, then this top tip will restore its brilliance! Simply buy a bottle of carbonated water add some washing up liquid and give your gold a soak for up to 3-4 minutes. Washing up liquid is great for removing dirt, grease and grime and it does a splendid job on my Gold jewellery. Once you’ve given it a soak make sure your rinse thoroughly with cold water and try buffing gently with a soft cloth – et voila!
I’d recommend sparkling water as a perfect way of making your diamonds, rubies and sapphires gleam. Place them in a class overnight to soak and let the bubbles do the work! It really is that quick and easy.
Cleaning pearls can be difficult as they can’t be soaked or cleaned with washing up liquid or detergent as you could damage the pearl and the string they’re held together with. In my lengthy pearl wearing experience my suggestion is to clean as you go – so after every time you wear them give them a gentle clean with a soft cloth. Simple but very effective.
Hope you’ve found these tips super useful. If you’ve got any quirky tips for cleaning your own jewellery feel free to share them on our comments section! We would love to know what you do to keep your jewellery clean and shiny!
Our three reasons why you should support independent jewellery designers
On the BeUnique Jewellery blog we are all about independent designers and love their unique and distinctive designs. I know that a majority of us feel a lot more comfortable buying jewellery from Accessorize, BeaverBrooks or Marks and Spencer but I think we should be embracing independent jewellery! After all you’re likely to be buying mass produced products. So for this blog post I wanted to tout the local independent jeweller and why you should support independent designers..
#1 The love for the unique
All independent jewellery designers have a love for the unique. Everything they make and do has been conjured up by their vivid imagination and you won’t find anything else like it on the high street. If you’re fed up of some of the bland jewellery you see in the shops, then taking a look at the Etsy store is a must. You can spend ages searching for one of a kind pieces that no one else has.
#2 Support British and local entrepreneurs
So Brexit happened and it will be in more important now and in the future to support local businesses. Online stores such as Etsy, Folksy and Not on the High Street help support the next generation of designers and are hotbeds of innovation and creativity. By supporting up and coming designers we are helping to pave the way to their success in the future. Also local jewellers are much more likely to give back to the community, with profits staying in the community and not being shipped off to some overseas mega corporation!
#3 The best customer service
Independent jewellery designers will have a greater commitment to their business – that’s what I have found from speaking to a variety of jewellers over the last few months. All the jewellers I meet have a hands on approach to managing their business, and they care for the job they do and the products they produce. If you have an issue they are much more likely to take a personalised approach to you or if you have feedback or an idea they want to hear it!
There are many reasons to support local jewellers, I personally love them for their inspiration and bespoke pieces they can create. If you are looking to support local businesses or you want something truly unique then you must consider local and independent jewellery makers and the shops that sell their designs!
Your three key jewellery trends for Autumn/Winter 2016
So the nights are drawing in a bit and I’m starting to seek out my cosy jumpers, fluffy socks and knitted gloves…. now where did I put them again?! I’m sad to say that summer is officially coming to an end. Bye flips flops, bye sun tan lotion, bye vitamin D… I honestly felt like nothing was going to help beat the post summer blues until I started getting super excited about what the latest jewellery trends 2016 might be for this Autumn and Winter! Things are looking up and after some lengthy internet searching and lusting I wanted to share with you what my key three jewellery trends to look out for this season are. Hopefully it will be a ray of sunshine in the darker months!
Jewellery Trend #1 Over-sized choker necklace
So, if like me you were a teen in the 90’s you’ll probably remember those tattoo type chokers that were all the rage at school. Things have come a long way since then. The choker started making its comeback in Spring 2014 and has been on the up ever since. They’ve gone big and chunky this season and I’m loving it. Great big bold statements made by Balmain or the delicate intricacies of Oscar De La Renta. These chokers are far too cool for school..
If like me your wallet doesn’t stretch to designer brands however, then I’ve found these lovelies hiding in the Etsy store to help keep you bang on trend. Even better they are created by some of my fav independent jewellery designers. If you want to go delicate and subtle try LayeredandLong’s dainty choker necklace or for something a bit more in your face take a look at this chainmaille tribal silver choker necklace from ApocalypseMetalWear.
Jewellery Trend #2: Pearl Necklaces
They say that diamonds are a girl’s best friend… I beg to differ! This season is all about pearls and you don’t have to be over 60 or Helen Mirren to pull this look off. This is a trend that’s elegant and chic and was seen being teemed with denim (yes denim), in the Miu Miu collection. But it works and I love it.
Looks like our independent jewellery designer friends are cottoning on too and there are plenty of pearls to drape yourselves in. Take a look at this pearl necklace from misticpearls or pearlislanduk to help perfect your look.
Jewellery Trends #3 Bracelets over gloves
Urm so yeah, didn’t you know? This is a thing now. And whether you have a cuff, bracelet or dainty bangle, anything goes with this leading the pack trend. It’s certainly something that I haven’t seen before and I’m going to embrace it! One thing I know for sure, I’m getting myself some chunky knit gloves and will be having a good old search to find some killer bracelets to match. I’m thinking I might take a look at JezebelCharms, SkyesPurpleCloud or our own Gold Heart Bangle. Bring on the cold weather! ( I think..)
I've read loads of articles about blogging and they all come back to one thing - let the reader get to know you and inject your personality into whatever you're blogging about.
Well, I'm no writer but the least I can do is tell you a little bit about me.
Here are some of my favourite things:
- Making people happy. I love the look on someone’s face when you give them a thoughtful present that they love.
- Jewels and shiny things. I love jewellery. Dainty and delicate, bold and statement, handmade, sparkly, unique, all of it. I love how everyone has completely different tastes. I know when I go jewellery shopping for my 3 sisters, my oldest sister Carla loves small delicate, cute, and dainty jewellery. Little hearts, little stars and tiny sparkly things. My younger sister Sarah however likes the bold and beautiful. Statement necklaces, layered up rings, large hoop earrings. Jewellery that makes you stand out from the crowd. My littlest sister Kate on the other hand is different again. She loves the unique and the quirky. The kawaii and the kitsch. I remember once she bought me a necklace with an iced doughnut as a pendant. That sort of thing.
- Dogs. They enjoy the simple things in life. Being taken for a walk is the BEST, MOST EXCITING THING IN THE WORLD EVER! Even though they've already been on two walks today. My aspiration in life is to get this much enjoyment out of such simple, day to day things.
There's more but I won't bore you with it now... Thanks for reading! Xwww.lovebeunique.com
What made me set up this lovely website and who are BeUnique?
My older sister and I did a jewellery making course last year and learnt how to make beaded jewellery. Since then, I got a little obsessed. Obsessed with buying beads, making things out of beads and wearing things I've made out of beads...
This image was made for me!
I also love looking at what other people are making. I could spend hours on Pinterest and Etsy (in fact, I sometimes do) scrolling down pages of beautiful handmade jewellery. I decided to purchase some gorgeous things from small, independent boutiques and unique handmade treasures from creative entrepreneurs, putting all my favorites in one place to sell to like minded people and that was the beginning of BeUnique!
Before I leave, a quote from my favorite childhood author:
Welcome to BeUnique Jewellery!
